INGERSOLL – Brooms were swept and curling rocks were let loose.

The Ingersoll Curling Club was busy Saturday with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and area holding its annual Curl for Kids Sake.

The Ingersoll event saw 12 teams of four and an additional 20 to 25 volunteers compete in two six-ended games with lunch, door prizes, an online auction and teams competing for top spot.

“We like to see them have fun, but this one allows them to try curling,” BBBS of Ingersoll, Tillsonburg and area development coordinator Nicole Killaire said of the event. “It’s a great opportunity to learn about the community and try curling. It’s a fun way to try the sport.”

The Tillsonburg event Feb. 10 will have eight teams and feature similar prizes. Members of the Ingersoll Curling Club were also on hand to help give instructions for newer players to the sport or those needing a refresher.

The event was in its 19th year in Ingersoll and will see its 14th annual edition Feb. 10 in Tillsonburg. The days are one of the organizations main fundraisers, with all money going towards their mentoring programs.

“This helps us run these programs that serve the roughly 250 children in the community,” Killaire said. “The money raised today, our goal is $20,000 for here and Tillsonburg, and that goes back into mentoring.”

The annual event, along with Bowl for Kids Sake in the spring and Bid for Kids Sake charity auction in the fall, are the three main fundraisers. Smaller events throughout the year are also held.

Prizes for best dressed team, top fundraising team, top scoring team and lowest scoring team were also rewarded at the end of the day.

“We like to do fun prizes to make it more enjoyable and everyone who curls gets a prize, so everyone walks away with a prize,” Killaire said.

With the event gaining steam, it continues to be a mainstay in the community.

“It’s grown over the years and people love coming out each year,” Killaire said. “
